The Ruby Family of grapefruit from Florida is known for its rich red interior, bright citrus aroma, and refreshing sweet-tart flavor. Over the years, this variety, along with the special Florida soils and climate, established Florida as the King of Grapefruit with consumers worldwide. Florida was famous for its special Red Grapefruit! The Mixons are working to rebuild this famous reputation with Florida Grapefruit! Our farms are located throughout Florida, mostly on deep sandy soils with special microclimates, that have historically been the best production areas of Grapefruit. Our farms are unique as we are growing this grapefruit under a protective screen which allows the Mixon Grapefruit to be produced without the dreaded Citrus Greening disease. The result is that trees THRIVE and produce incredible pieces of fruit with exceptional fruit quality both inside and out! Some surprises…few if any seeds, no wind scarring, Juiciness, Flavor is back and production is reliable. Welcome back Florida Grapefruit, we missed you!

The Mixon Farms are unique in that they all have large screens covering the entire growing area. This strategy creates a protected environment that keeps out the Citrus Psyllid which is the carrier of Citrus Greening. It allows us to control the pest through exclusion instead of sprays, etc.
Think of a large screen porch that keeps mosquitos out and protects you and your family. Our screens do the same, they create a unique Psyllid-free microclimate that allows us to manage tree health, irrigation, nutrition, and other pest pressure with greater precision. Under these conditions, the trees flourish! They grow fast and produce incredible, great-tasting, beautiful fruit.
The trade word that has been adopted is Citrus Under Protective Screen, CUPS for short. Dr. Arnold Schumann developed a working prototype in 2013, and through the years the Mixons have modified the design to maximize efficiency and maintenance.
You can find more on CUPS and Dr. Schumann’s research at the UF/IFAS website.
This strategic growing approach and over a decade of learning allows the Mixons to grow fruit with more protection, more precision, and more attention to quality.

One of the greatest advantages of our farms is the ability to grow grapefruit with exceptional quality - inside and out.
The first thing you’ll notice is the beautiful yellow exterior, often touched with an elegant red-to-pink blush. The skin is smooth, clean, and surprisingly blemish-free, with fruit that trends toward the larger, traditional Florida grapefruit size.
Inside, the color ranges from medium to deep red. As soon as you peel it, you’ll notice what Florida grapefruit was always known for: incredible juiciness and a bright, fresh citrus aroma.
The flavor is what truly sets it apart.
Balanced, refreshing, slightly sweet, and full of juice, it delivers the kind of rich Florida Grapefruit experience many people remember and have been missing for years.

The Mixon's grapefruit is a seasonal Florida fruit, typically available from November through April.
Those cooler months are when Florida grapefruit reaches its best expression - developing color, juice, and flavor that make it such a beloved part of the state’s citrus tradition.
Because our grapefruit is seasonal, availability can vary depending on crop timing, weather, and harvest conditions. But that seasonality is part of what makes it special. It is not a year-round commodity. It is a fresh Florida crop worth waiting for.
